I have a new Asus M51SN laptop on order and I’m looking to upgrade from the standard 5400RPM drive to something a bit quicker. I was initially looking at the 200GB Seagate 2.5’ 7200RPM drive (HD-ST9200420AS) [which Australian shoppers can order from Aus PC Market for $AU198 including delivery - click here to order one!], but then discovered that Western Digital are releasing their latest 10,000rpm Raptor drive in a 2.5’ form factor.
I realise it’s total overkill for a laptop, but I still want it!
So my question is, will the new Raptor even work in a laptop without shorting the power supply or melting its way through the casing like some out of control nuclear reactor?

It is worth noting that as of 2005, only a few SATA controllers could fully support command queuing. This drive became immensely popular in high-end gaming systems because of these features.
In 2006 Western Digital revised the WD740GD specification and released the WD740ADFD, ostensibly the same drive but with 16 MB of on-board cache, and a larger single platter (one 75 GB platter vs two 37 GB platters). Support for TCQ (rarely supported on SATA RAID controllers) was dropped in favor of NCQ, and at the same time replacing the SATA-to-PATA bridge controller chip with a native SATA controller. Unfortunately one of the major enhancements of WD740ADFD, the NCQ, is implemented so badly in the WD740ADFD-00NLR1 that it has been added to the Linux libata drive blacklist. Western Digital later released a 2.5-inch Velociraptor (BLFS models) which is nearly identical to the 3.5-inch version, but without the IcePack heat sink. These drives are designed for use in servers and are unsuitable for laptops because of their power requirements and 15 mm thickness. TLER is also enabled by default on BLFS models.
A severe issue with the fourth generation of raptor drives was faulty firmware, which caused the drive to report TLER timeouts after roughly 50 days of continuous operation (precisely 49.71 days counted in milliseconds, which corresponds to the overflow of a 32-bit number).[10][11][12] The bug has been present in all models of drives shipped, from their introduction up to late 2009. WDC never admitted the existence of this bug, or officially released a firmware update; however, an update was leaked by a WDC technician and is still readily available through various download sites.[13] The bug was of minor significance for desktop users, but prolonged drive operation in RAID setups could result in mass drive dropouts after 49.71 days, causing maintenance problems and potentially data loss.VR200M[edit]
The fifth-generation Raptor (or second-generation VelociRaptor) drive was announced in April 2010. Besides increasing the total capacity to 600 GB, the SATA interface speed had been increased to 6 Gbit/s. The drives are sold either in the same IcePack mounting frame as the previous generation, or as bare drives (intended for rackmount servers). While the drive width of 2.5 inches may entice users to try to install a VelociRaptor drive in a laptop, this is not possible. Not only are the drives a thicker-than-usual 15 mm high, but they require both +12 V and +5 V power that most laptops cannot provide. I have a new Asus M51SN laptop on order and I’m looking to upgrade from the standard 5400RPM drive to something a bit quicker. I was initially looking at the 200GB Seagate 2.5’ 7200RPM drive (HD-ST9200420AS) [which Australian shoppers can order from Aus PC Market for $AU198 including delivery - click here to order one!], but then discovered that Western Digital are releasing their latest 10,000rpm Raptor drive in a 2.5’ form factor.
I realise it’s total overkill for a laptop, but I still want it!
So my question is, will the new Raptor even work in a laptop without shorting the power supply or melting its way through the casing like some out of control nuclear reactor?

In brief: No, I’m afraid the new, and extremely fast, 300Gb Western Digital ’VelociRaptor’ drive will not work in a laptop.
You might be able to use it in a tiny small-form-factor PC, though.
The VelociRaptor’s been out for a little while now, so the early-adopter loonies should all have theirs by now and normal people will be able to find them in stock. Here in Australia, Aus PC Market will deliver a VelociRaptor anywhere in the country for $AU390.50 (Australian shoppers can click here to order one!). The most obvious reason for this is that the VelociRaptor drive module, while it is indeed a 2.5-inch device bolted into a 3.5-inch-drive-sized holder, is considerably thicker than the standard laptop drive form factor, which is only 9.5mm tall. The ’Hey Cortana’ Voice Activation (VA) feature allows users to quickly engage the Cortana experience outside of their active context (i.e., what is currently on screen) by using their voice. Users often want to be able to instantly access an experience without having to physically interact touch a device. For phone users this may be due to driving in the car and having their attention and hands engaged with operating the vehicle. For an Xbox user this may be due not wanting to find and connect a controller. For PC users, this may be due to rapid access to an experience without having to perform multiple mouse, touch and/or keyboard actions, e.g. a computer in the kitchen.
Voice activation provides always listening speech input via predefined key phrase(s) or ’activation phrases’. Key phrases may be uttered by themselves (’Hey Cortana’) as a staged command, or followed by a speech action, for example, ’Hey Cortana, where is my next meeting?’, a chained command.
The term Keyword Detection, describes the detection of the keyword by either hardware or software.
Keyword only activation occurs when only the Cortana keyword is said, Cortana starts and plays the EarCon sound to indicate that it has entered listening mode.
A chained command describes the ability of issuing a command immediately following the keyword (like “Hey Cortana, call John”) and have Cortana start (if not already started) and follow the command (starting a phone call with John).

Microsoft provides an OS default keyword spotter (software keyword spotter) that is used to ensure quality of hardware keyword detections and to provide the Hey Cortana experience in cases where hardware keyword detection is absent or unavailable.The ’Learn my voice’ feature
The ’Learn my voice’ feature allows the user to train Cortana to recognize their unique voice. This is accomplished by the user selecting Learn how I say ’Hey Cortana’ in the Cortana settings screen. The user then repeats six carefully chosen phrases that provide a sufficient variety of phonetic patterns to identify the unique attributes of the users voice.
When voice activation is paired with ’Learn my voice’, the two algorithms will work together to reduce false activations. This is especially valuable for the meeting room scenario, where one person says ’Hey Cortana’ in a room full of devices. This feature is available only for Windows 10 version 1903 and earlier.

The audio stack external interfaces for enabling Voice Activation serves as the communication pipeline for the speech platform and the audio drivers. The external interfaces are divided into three parts.
*Keyword detector Device Driver Interface (DDI). The Keyword detector Device Driver Interface is responsible for configuring and arming the HW Keyword Spotter (KWS). It is also used by the driver to notify the system of a detection event.
*Keyword Detector OEM Adapter DLL. This DLL implements a COM interface to adapt the driver specific opaque data for use by the OS to assist with keyword detection.
*WaveRT streaming enhancements. The enhancements enable the audio driver to burst stream the buffered audio data from the keyword detection.Audio Endpoint Properties
Audio endpoint graph building occurs normally. The graph is prepared to handle faster than real time capture. Timestamps on captured buffers remain true. Specifically, the timestamps will correctly reflect data that was captured in the past and buffered, and is now “bursting”.Theory of Operation
The driver exposes a KS filter for its capture device as usual. This filter supports several KS properties and a KS event to configure, enable and signal a detection event. The filter also includes an additional pin factory identified as a keyword spotter (KWS) pin. This pin is used to stream audio from the keyword spotter.
The properties are:
*Supported keyword types - KSPROPERTY_SOUNDDETECTOR_PATTERNS. This property is set by the operating system to configure the keywords to be detected.
*List of keyword patterns GUIDs - KSPROPERTY_SOUNDDETECTOR_SUPPORTEDPATTERNS. This property is used to get a list of GUIDs that identify the types of supported patterns.
*Armed - KSPROPERTY_SOUNDDETECTOR_ARMED. This read/write property is a simply Boolean status indicating whether the detector is armed. The OS sets this to engage the keyword detector. The OS can clear this to disengage. The driver automatically clears this when keyword patterns are set and also after a keyword is detected. (The OS must rearm.)
*Match result - KSPROPERTY_SOUNDDETECTOR_MATCHRESULT. This read property holds the result data after detection has occurred.

While the detector is armed, the hardware can be continuously capturing and buffering audio data in a small FIFO buffer. (The size of this FIFO buffer is determined by requirements outside of this document, but might typically be hundreds of milliseconds to several seconds.) The detection algorithm operates on the data streaming through this buffer. The design of the driver and hardware are such that while armed there is no interaction between the driver and hardware and no interrupts to the “application” processors until a keyword is detected. This allows the system to reach a lower power state if there is no other activity.
When the hardware detects a keyword, it generates an interrupt. While waiting for the driver to service the interrupt, the hardware continues to capture audio into the buffer, ensuring no data after the keyword is lost, within buffering limits.Keyword Timestamps
After detecting a keyword, all voice activation solutions must buffer all of the spoken keyword, including 250ms before the start of the keyword. The audio driver must provide timestamps identifying the start and end of the key phrase in the stream.
In order to support the keyword start/end timestamps, DSP software may need to internally timestamp events based on a DSP clock. Once a keyword is detected, the DSP software interacts with the driver to prepare a KS event. The driver and DSP software will need to map the DSP timestamps to a Windows performance counter value. The method of doing this is specific to the hardware design. One possible solution is for the driver to read current performance counter, query the current DSP timestamp, read current performance counter again, and then estimate a correlation between performance counter and DSP time. Then given the correlation, the driver can map the keyword DSP timestamps to Windows performance counter timestamps.Keyword Detector OEM Adapter Interface
The OEM supplies a COM object implementation that acts as an intermediary between the OS and the driver, helping to compute or parse the opaque data that is written and read to the audio driver through KSPROPERTY_SOUNDDETECTOR_PATTERNS and KSPROPERTY_SOUNDDETECTOR_MATCHRESULT.
The CLSID of the COM object is a detector pattern type GUID returned by the KSPROPERTY_SOUNDDETECTOR_SUPPORTEDPATTERNS. The ’Hey Cortana’ Voice Activation (VA) feature allows users to quickly engage the Cortana experience outside of their active context (i.e., what is currently on screen) by using their voice. Users often want to be able to instantly access an experience without having to physically interact touch a device. For phone users this may be due to driving in the car and having their attention and hands engaged with operating the vehicle. For an Xbox user this may be due not wanting to find and connect a controller. For PC users, this may be due to rapid access to an experience without having to perform multiple mouse, touch and/or keyboard actions, e.g. a computer in the kitchen.
Voice activation provides always listening speech input via predefined key phrase(s) or ’activation phrases’. Key phrases may be uttered by themselves (’Hey Cortana’) as a staged command, or followed by a speech action, for example, ’Hey Cortana, where is my next meeting?’, a chained command.
The term Keyword Detection, describes the detection of the keyword by either hardware or software.
Keyword only activation occurs when only the Cortana keyword is said, Cortana starts and plays the EarCon sound to indicate that it has entered listening mode.
A chained command describes the ability of issuing a command immediately following the keyword (like “Hey Cortana, call John”) and have Cortana start (if not already started) and follow the command (starting a phone call with John).

Microsoft provides an OS default keyword spotter (software keyword spotter) that is used to ensure quality of hardware keyword detections and to provide the Hey Cortana experience in cases where hardware keyword detection is absent or unavailable.The ’Learn my voice’ feature
The ’Learn my voice’ feature allows the user to train Cortana to recognize their unique voice. This is accomplished by the user selecting Learn how I say ’Hey Cortana’ in the Cortana settings screen. The user then repeats six carefully chosen phrases that provide a sufficient variety of phonetic patterns to identify the unique attributes of the users voice.
When voice activation is paired with ’Learn my voice’, the two algorithms will work together to reduce false activations. This is especially valuable for the meeting room scenario, where one person says ’Hey Cortana’ in a room full of devices. This feature is available only for Windows 10 version 1903 and earlier.

The audio stack external interfaces for enabling Voice Activation serves as the communication pipeline for the speech platform and the audio drivers. The external interfaces are divided into three parts.
*Keyword detector Device Driver Interface (DDI). The Keyword detector Device Driver Interface is responsible for configuring and arming the HW Keyword Spotter (KWS). It is also used by the driver to notify the system of a detection event.
*Keyword Detector OEM Adapter DLL. This DLL implements a COM interface to adapt the driver specific opaque data for use by the OS to assist with keyword detection.
*WaveRT streaming enhancements. The enhancements enable the audio driver to burst stream the buffered audio data from the keyword detection.Audio Endpoint Properties
Audio endpoint graph building occurs normally. The graph is prepared to handle faster than real time capture. Timestamps on captured buffers remain true. Specifically, the timestamps will correctly reflect data that was captured in the past and buffered, and is now “bursting”.Theory of Operation
The driver exposes a KS filter for its capture device as usual. This filter supports several KS properties and a KS event to configure, enable and signal a detection event. The filter also includes an additional pin factory identified as a keyword spotter (KWS) pin. This pin is used to stream audio from the keyword spotter.
The properties are:
*Supported keyword types - KSPROPERTY_SOUNDDETECTOR_PATTERNS. This property is set by the operating system to configure the keywords to be detected.
*List of keyword patterns GUIDs - KSPROPERTY_SOUNDDETECTOR_SUPPORTEDPATTERNS. This property is used to get a list of GUIDs that identify the types of supported patterns.
*Armed - KSPROPERTY_SOUNDDETECTOR_ARMED. This read/write property is a simply Boolean status indicating whether the detector is armed. The OS sets this to engage the keyword detector. The OS can clear this to disengage. The driver automatically clears this when keyword patterns are set and also after a keyword is detected. (The OS must rearm.)
*Match result - KSPROPERTY_SOUNDDETECTOR_MATCHRESULT. This read property holds the result data after detection has occurred.
The event that is fired when a keyword is detected is a KSEVENT_SOUNDDETECTOR_MATCHDETECTED event.Sequence of OperationSystem Startup

While the detector is armed, the hardware can be continuously capturing and buffering audio data in a small FIFO buffer. (The size of this FIFO buffer is determined by requirements outside of this document, but might typically be hundreds of milliseconds to several seconds.) The detection algorithm operates on the data streaming through this buffer. The design of the driver and hardware are such that while armed there is no interaction between the driver and hardware and no interrupts to the “application” processors until a keyword is detected. This allows the system to reach a lower power state if there is no other activity.
When the hardware detects a keyword, it generates an interrupt. While waiting for the driver to service the interrupt, the hardware continues to capture audio into the buffer, ensuring no data after the keyword is lost, within buffering limits.Keyword Timestamps
After detecting a keyword, all voice activation solutions must buffer all of the spoken keyword, including 250ms before the start of the keyword. The audio driver must provide timestamps identifying the start and end of the key phrase in the stream.
In order to support the keyword start/end timestamps, DSP software may need to internally timestamp events based on a DSP clock. Once a keyword is detected, the DSP software interacts with the driver to prepare a KS event. The driver and DSP software will need to map the DSP timestamps to a Windows performance counter value. The method of doing this is specific to the hardware design. One possible solution is for the driver to read current performance counter, query the current DSP timestamp, read current performance counter again, and then estimate a correlation between performance counter and DSP time. Then given the correlation, the driver can map the keyword DSP timestamps to Windows performance counter timestamps.Keyword Detector OEM Adapter Interface
The OEM supplies a COM object implementation that acts as an intermediary between the OS and the driver, helping to compute or parse the opaque data that is written and read to the audio driver through KSPROPERTY_SOUNDDETECTOR_PATTERNS and KSPROPERTY_SOUNDDETECTOR_MATCHRESULT.

Camera Controls
- Source Camera Selects the camera (or camera type) used to shoot your footage. This setting is required in order to apply the correct color correction.
- Exposure Performs an adjustment prior to the film emulation being applied.
- Temp Adjusts the color temperature. This assumes that the clip temp is 5600 (daylight). Moving the slider to the left makes the scene cooler. Moving to the right makes it warmer.
Film Controls
- Convert To drop down Selects the particular film stock to be emulated.
- Size drop down Selects the negative size to emulate. Smaller values such as 8mm are fuzzier with larger grain. Larger values have smaller grain.
- Film Color slider Adjusts the balance between the original digital camera color palette, and the film color palette. Typically you would leave this at 100% film
- Grain slider Adjusts the amount of grain applied to the image. The default is 100%, which is an accurate representation of the grain for the selected film stocks. Some stocks have more grain - such as D3200.

Since 1948, international law–The Universal Declaration of Human Rights–has guaranteed the right to seek and receive asylum in other countries. Since 1965, refugee admissions have been the smallest of the three main paths for legal admission to the United States, along with preferences for family unification and skilled employment. To receive refugee visas, applicants must demonstrate their endangerment and inability to return to their homes and undergo extensive vetting while abroad. The U.S. government retains authority to set standards and manage approval processes, which usually emphasize political considerations. For example, Cubans fleeing communism have received some of the highest levels of U.S. welcome, whereas Haitians fleeing an abusive dictatorship are regularly turned away. U.S. refugee policy began systematically developing after World War II and regular annual allocations of refugee visas started with the 1965 law. Unlike refugees, asylum seekers arrive at the United States without preauthorization and request permission to enter and gain safety. The United States is obligated to evaluate their applications and on the principle of non-refoulement should not force refugees or asylum seekers to return to a country in which they are liable to be subjected to persecution. However, such international standards conflict with the priorities of many nations seeking to limit what and how many persons they allow to immigrate, leaving millions of persons displaced without permanent legal homes.Read More
International laws provide for immigration and asylum by persons fleeing persecution or fear persecution based on their race, religion, nationality, or membership in a targeted political or social group. In the United States, refugees enter with immigrant visas after undergoing an extensive vetting process that confirms their status. Asylum seekers arrive without this prior authorization but are allowed by international law to request asylum and under the principle of refoulement cannot be forced to return to situations of danger. The U.S. government is required to assess their claims and has authority to decide whether to grant asylum.
As early as 1917, such concerns for human rights became part of general immigration law. The chief goal of the 1917 Immigration Act was to drastically reduce overall immigration by imposing a literacy test, but allowed exemptions for asylum seekers, especially those fleeing religious persecution. Requesting asylum became more difficult during the 1920s with the enactment of a new system for immigration restriction which emphasized numeric caps. These quantitative limits were enforced by requiring potential immigrants to apply for entry visas while abroad by going to the U.S. diplomatic office closest to their point of origin. Persons without visas could not embark for the United States, thus preventing potential asylum seekers from reaching U.S. shores. These methods sharply reduced overall levels of immigration in conjunction with the Great Depression, including the rejection of thousands of visa applications from Jews seeking to escape Nazi persecution during the 1930s.
The alliances of World War II and the Cold War elevated international concern for the millions displaced by war and the reconfiguration of international borders and political alignments. The founding of the United Nations in 1945 paved the way for global cooperation regarding world affairs, including the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights which guaranteed refugee rights to seek and receive asylum in other countries. In concert with growing attention to human rights, the United States began admitting limited numbers of refugees in 1945 at the urging of President Harry Truman but without changing existing immigration laws. Congress passed the first law directly addressing the refugee situation in 1948. The Displaced Persons Act lifted quota restrictions for European refugees who could find employment in the United States without displacing U.S. workers. Almost 350,000 people immigrated before the program expired in 1952.

In 1950 the United Nations created the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and defined legal protections for refugees in the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees. The United States did not sign this convention although it later joined the 1967 Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees whereby it agreed to uphold international standards for refugee relief.
Provisions for refugees increasingly became part of regular immigration laws. In 1952, a general reform effort retained the national origins quota limits without making provision for regular refugee admissions. However, this law, the McCarran-Walter Act, granted the attorney general authority to parole asylum seekers into the United States on a temporary basis, with Congress holding the power to vote later whether to grant them permanent status. Parole authority was used three times—for over 30,000 Hungarians in 1956-1957, Cubans in 1961-1962, and Chinese in 1962—each on behalf of refugees from communism. Responding to criticisms from the White House and the Department of State, Congress passed the 1953 Refugee Relief Act providing about 200,000 nonquota immigrant visas for refugees and escapees from communism, including 5,000 for refugees in the Far East. After the Refugee Relief Program concluded at the end of 1956 without exhausting the visa allocations, several temporary laws redistributed them to groups whose allocations had been inadequate. Between 1946 and 1967, about 775,000 refugees immigrated to the United States through such temporary legal measures.
In 1965 refugee admissions became a permanent aspect of immigration law. Through the Hart-Celler Immigration Act, refugee admissions were the narrowest of the three main paths for legal admission to the United States alongside family unification and skilled employment. Although the law capped annual admissions at 17,4000, unpredictable outbreaks of crises drove numbers of refugees well above this limit in some years, as with the airlifting of about a quarter million Cubans fleeing communism under Castro between 1965 and 1973 and the 1980 Mariel Boatlift. In some instances, Congress acted to provide additional resources and immigration rights, for example with the 1966 Cuban Adjustment Act and the Indochinese Immigration and Refugee Act of 1975 that followed the fall of Saigon. About 130,000 Southeast Asians, mostly Vietnamese, were able to resettle in the United States, followed by several additional waves of refugees fleeing persecution by the newly established communist governments of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. In response to the inadequacy of the provisions set forth in 1965, the 1980 Refugee Act raised the annual ceiling for refugees from 17,400 to 50,000 and created a process for reviewing and adjusting the refugee ceiling to meet emergencies. It also funded a new Office of U.S. Coordinator for Refugee Affairs and an Office of Refugee Resettlement and formally established procedures for asylum seekers.
During the 1980s, U.S. policies for asylum further developed with the arrival of hundreds of thousands of El Salvadorans, Guatemalans, Nicaraguans, Haitians, Uruguayans, Chileans, Colombians, and Argentinians fleeing warfare and politically dangerous conditions in their homelands. Although they sought safety, the United States did not recognize their asylum applications because the 1980 Refugee Act had defined refugees as those fleeing individual persecution, rather than general conditions of violence. The Reagan administration characterized Guatemalans, Nicaraguans, and Salvadorans as economic refugees without consideration for the violence in their homelands. A coalition of religious and refugee assistance organizations filed suit to challenge the federal government’s denial of asylum applications from Salvadorans and Guatemalans. Widespread protests followed and produced the modern sanctuary movement. These pressures produced the out-of-court American Baptist Churches (ABC) settlement which permitted applicants to have their cases re-evaluated if they had arrived before 1990. Many Guatemalans and Salvadorans were able to regularize their statuses through these new procedures. After 1992, about 50,000 Chinese were also able to claim asylum through the Chinese Student Protection Act which Congress passed in response to the brutal Chinese government crackdowns on student protesters in Tiananmen Plaza in 1989. The 1997 Nicaraguan Adjustment and Central American Relief Act (NACARA) offered suspension of deportation to Nicaraguans and other Central Americans meeting certain requirements as did the 1998 Haitian Refugee Immigrant Fairness Act for Haitians.
These laws and procedural precedents configure current standards and practices for U.S. management of refugee and asylum-seekers, although annual limits, regularizations of status, and admissions have varied according to policy and changing conditions of need.Lesson PlanObjectives:

Deportation rates and stories are in the news on a recurring basis. Different presidents, in particular, get criticized for their policies on deportation.
Ask students to discuss these questions in pairs:

If you are in deportation proceedings, is there any way you can stay in the United States?
Have students share out answers and discuss them.

In this lesson we will learn about one way that you can stay in the United States if you are in deportation proceedings, called asylum. You can also apply for asylum if you are in the United States as a lawful visitor, or if you are in the United States without lawful status, but are not in deportation proceedings.Body:
Part I:
*In pairs or small groups students look at Part A of the i-589 asylum application form. They will put themselves in the shoes of an asylum seeker and critically read this portion of the document to assess what it would be like to fill it out. They will read through it together and code anything that stands out to them as follows:
Question mark– anything you don’t understand
Exclamation mark– anything that would be difficult for you to fill out, or imagine would be difficult for someone else to fill out
Star– anything else interesting
*Teacher can model by directing students’ attention to item 8. Teacher could put exclamation mark or star, imagining that if they were applying without lawful status and without being in deportation proceedings already, it would be worrisome to send their address to the government. Or, teacher could point out item 19c and put an exclamation mark, imagining that if they lived near a border and crossed the border regularly, it would be almost impossible to list each entry into the U.S.
*Once students finish working in pairs, teacher can lead discussion of what in the application merit a question mark, exclamation mark, and star. Teacher can encourage students to notice issues with the application as a whole, like the fact that it is in English and requires a high degree of literacy to navigate.

*Students must work together to assess whether the asylum application they received would likely be accepted or denied by the United States based on whether or not they qualify for asylum.
*In order to qualify for asylum the applicant has to be persecuted by the government of their home country, or an entity that the government can’t control, for their race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group.

Since 1965, refugee admissions have been the smallest of the three main paths for legal admission to the United States, along with preferences for family unification and skilled employment. International laws provide for immigration and asylum by persons fleeing persecution or fear persecution based on their race, religion, nationality, or membership in a targeted political or social group. In the United States, refugees enter with immigrant visas after undergoing an extensive vetting process that confirms their status. Asylum seekers arrive without this prior authorization but are allowed by international law to request asylum and under the principle of refoulement cannot be forced to return to situations of danger. The U.S. government is required to assess their claims and has authority to decide whether to grant asylum.
As early as 1917, such concerns for human rights became part of general immigration law. The chief goal of the 1917 Immigration Act was to drastically reduce overall immigration by imposing a literacy test, but allowed exemptions for asylum seekers, especially those fleeing religious persecution. Requesting asylum became more difficult during the 1920s with the enactment of a new system for immigration restriction which emphasized numeric caps. These quantitative limits were enforced by requiring potential immigrants to apply for entry visas while abroad by going to the U.S. diplomatic office closest to their point of origin. Persons without visas could not embark for the United States, thus preventing potential asylum seekers from reaching U.S. shores. These methods sharply reduced overall levels of immigration in conjunction with the Great Depression, including the rejection of thousands of visa applications from Jews seeking to escape Nazi persecution during the 1930s.
The alliances of World War II and the Cold War elevated international concern for the millions displaced by war and the reconfiguration of international borders and political alignments. The founding of the United Nations in 1945 paved the way for global cooperation regarding world affairs, including the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights which guaranteed refugee rights to seek and receive asylum in other countries. In concert with growing attention to human rights, the United States began admitting limited numbers of refugees in 1945 at the urging of President Harry Truman but without changing existing immigration laws. Congress passed the first law directly addressing the refugee situation in 1948. The Displaced Persons Act lifted quota restrictions for European refugees who could find employment in the United States without displacing U.S. workers. Almost 350,000 people immigrated before the program expired in 1952.

In 1965 refugee admissions became a permanent aspect of immigration law. Through the Hart-Celler Immigration Act, refugee admissions were the narrowest of the three main paths for legal admission to the United States alongside family unification and skilled employment. Although the law capped annual admissions at 17,4000, unpredictable outbreaks of crises drove numbers of refugees well above this limit in some years, as with the airlifting of about a quarter million Cubans fleeing communism under Castro between 1965 and 1973 and the 1980 Mariel Boatlift. In some instances, Congress acted to provide additional resources and immigration rights, for example with the 1966 Cuban Adjustment Act and the Indochinese Immigration and Refugee Act of 1975 that followed the fall of Saigon. About 130,000 Southeast Asians, mostly Vietnamese, were able to resettle in the United States, followed by several additional waves of refugees fleeing persecution by the newly established communist governments of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. In response to the inadequacy of the provisions set forth in 1965, the 1980 Refugee Act raised the annual ceiling for refugees from 17,400 to 50,000 and created a process for reviewing and adjusting the refugee ceiling to meet emergencies. It also funded a new Office of U.S. Coordinator for Refugee Affairs and an Office of Refugee Resettlement and formally established procedures for asylum seekers.
During the 1980s, U.S. policies for asylum further developed with the arrival of hundreds of thousands of El Salvadorans, Guatemalans, Nicaraguans, Haitians, Uruguayans, Chileans, Colombians, and Argentinians fleeing warfare and politically dangerous conditions in their homelands. Although they sought safety, the United States did not recognize their asylum applications because the 1980 Refugee Act had defined refugees as those fleeing individual persecution, rather than general conditions of violence. The Reagan administration characterized Guatemalans, Nicaraguans, and Salvadorans as economic refugees without consideration for the violence in their homelands. A coalition of religious and refugee assistance organizations filed suit to challenge the federal government’s denial of asylum applications from Salvadorans and Guatemalans. Widespread protests followed and produced the modern sanctuary movement. These pressures produced the out-of-court American Baptist Churches (ABC) settlement which permitted applicants to have their cases re-evaluated if they had arrived before 1990. Many Guatemalans and Salvadorans were able to regularize their statuses through these new procedures. After 1992, about 50,000 Chinese were also able to claim asylum through the Chinese Student Protection Act which Congress passed in response to the brutal Chinese government crackdowns on student protesters in Tiananmen Plaza in 1989. The 1997 Nicaraguan Adjustment and Central American Relief Act (NACARA) offered suspension of deportation to Nicaraguans and other Central Americans meeting certain requirements as did the 1998 Haitian Refugee Immigrant Fairness Act for Haitians.

Both offer 32-bit/384kHz digital-to-analogue conversion at excellent accuracy (within 0.3dB up to 20kHz). Both give you digital filter options to decide how you want the conversion to be done as well as crossfeed. Both can work as headphone amps in addition to dacs. What’s the difference? Primarily, the Big Ego gives you Line Out and the Little Ego does not. That makes it the more versatile offering, as it can be used as the dac for a fancier amplifier.
Let’s get into some detail…

The headphone amp on both is the TPA6130A2 DirectPath Stereo Headphone Amplifier integrated circuit, and all of the audio op-amps are LME49860MA.
I’ll talk about my favorite (and largely unique) thing about this dac: the digital filters. The Big Ego has three digital interpolation filters as well as a headphone blend filter (aka crossfeed). There is a Symmetrical filter (F1), which has equal amounts of pre-and-post-ringing (this is what the vast majority of dacs use). In addition to that, you can use an Asymmetrical Low Filter (F2) that has almost no pre-ringing, but has multiple cycles of post-ringing. Finally, you can also use an Asymmetrical High Filter that has very little pre-ringing or post-ringing (F3). I find F1 to be the most neutral, F2 be the most pleasant, and F3 to be slightly soft. As such, I use F2 pretty much all the time. More detail about the filters (and almost everything else discussed in the review) can be found in the Emotiva Big Ego Manual.
The headphone blend mode (F4) basically passes each channel through a high-pass filter, and some delay, and then mixes it into the other channel. This is all handled by a DSP, and shouldn’t introduce significant distortion on its own, but whenever you use filtering and delay it’s always possible. The one drawback of the crossfeed implementation is that it adds a few of gain to make it sound just as loud as the other filter options, which can indeed introduce distortion unless you lower the volume of the source. I found that reducing source volume by 5-10dB avoids any chance for distortion if I want to use the headphone blend filter.
How does it sound? Very good. The PCM5142 follows suit along with all the other Burr Brown chips I’ve heard and keeps things nice and smooth without much brightness. Nice punch and an overall sense of warmth. At the price, I’ve heard nothing this good, and I’ve heard quite a few comparable products from the likes of Meridian, CEntrance, Fiio and AudioQuest.
Negatives? As mentioned, the crossfeed introduces some distortion if you don’t lower your source volume a touch. The 3.5mm headphone out can also be finicky with 1/8″ -> 1/4″ adapters because there’s a bevel on either side (2/4 of my adapters don’t fit because they are too wide around the base). Finally, while volume control is analog controlled via digital (this is a very good thing), there are no volume buttons nor a knob on the Big Ego–you have to do it at the source. I’d like to see a volume control in v2.
It can also be very slightly grainy on some recordings. I went about trying to solve the (admittedly minor) grain issue. Is the grain the fault of the dac? Could I fix it? Let’s see…
First, I bought a cheap internal PCIe USB card. The asynchronous USB implementation of the Big Ego is good, but it is powered by the USB bus and is beholden to the quality of the signal you pass into it. I use the Big Ego at work, and my USB there sucks (bad enough that I couldn’t reliably use a Schiit Wyrd to clean up the signal because I’d get dropouts and distortion). Okay, the internal card certainly improved things. I still would get occasional momentary glitches and dropouts, but the signal became largely grain-free.
Now what? People keep talking about the UpTone Audio Regen. So, I went ahead and bought one and waited for a few weeks. It finally arrived, and I hooked it up. Immediately I gained a subjective feeling of less grain and much more overall smoothness. But maybe that’s placebo. Could I objectively measure improvements? Absolutely. Okay, problem solved. No audible issues, no objective problems, a beautifully smooth dac that can play basically anything I throw at it. But did I ruin the value? At $179 during Emotiva’s holiday sale, the Big Ego is a ridiculous steal. Adding a $175 Regen basically doubles the price. At $350… well, yeah, this is still better than anything I’ve ever heard at that price. Even if your USB sucks and you need to fix it with a Regen or similar solution, the Emotiva Big Ego is a great value.
Would I recommend the Big Ego even if you have mediocre USB? Absolutely. It’s still better than anything of a similar price without the Regen. I’m just a spoiled audiophile who can’t handle any sense of grain or dropouts, however occasional they may be. It’s still better than anything under $300 I’ve ever heard, and it’s MADE IN THE USA. Did I type that right? Damn right I did.

Both offer 32-bit/384kHz digital-to-analogue conversion at excellent accuracy (within 0.3dB up to 20kHz). Both give you digital filter options to decide how you want the conversion to be done as well as crossfeed. Both can work as headphone amps in addition to dacs. What’s the difference? Primarily, the Big Ego gives you Line Out and the Little Ego does not. That makes it the more versatile offering, as it can be used as the dac for a fancier amplifier.
Let’s get into some detail…
The BigEgo uses a TI / Burr Brown PCM5142 DAC chipThe Little Ego uses a TI / Burr Brown PCM5141 DAC chip
The headphone amp on both is the TPA6130A2 DirectPath Stereo Headphone Amplifier integrated circuit, and all of the audio op-amps are LME49860MA.
I’ll talk about my favorite (and largely unique) thing about this dac: the digital filters. The Big Ego has three digital interpolation filters as well as a headphone blend filter (aka crossfeed). There is a Symmetrical filter (F1), which has equal amounts of pre-and-post-ringing (this is what the vast majority of dacs use). In addition to that, you can use an Asymmetrical Low Filter (F2) that has almost no pre-ringing, but has multiple cycles of post-ringing. Finally, you can also use an Asymmetrical High Filter that has very little pre-ringing or post-ringing (F3). I find F1 to be the most neutral, F2 be the most pleasant, and F3 to be slightly soft. As such, I use F2 pretty much all the time. More detail about the filters (and almost everything else discussed in the review) can be found in the Emotiva Big Ego Manual.
The headphone blend mode (F4) basically passes each channel through a high-pass filter, and some delay, and then mixes it into the other channel. This is all handled by a DSP, and shouldn’t introduce significant distortion on its own, but whenever you use filtering and delay it’s always possible. The one drawback of the crossfeed implementation is that it adds a few of gain to make it sound just as loud as the other filter options, which can indeed introduce distortion unless you lower the volume of the source. I found that reducing source volume by 5-10dB avoids any chance for distortion if I want to use the headphone blend filter.
How does it sound? Very good. The PCM5142 follows suit along with all the other Burr Brown chips I’ve heard and keeps things nice and smooth without much brightness. Nice punch and an overall sense of warmth. At the price, I’ve heard nothing this good, and I’ve heard quite a few comparable products from the likes of Meridian, CEntrance, Fiio and AudioQuest.
Negatives? As mentioned, the crossfeed introduces some distortion if you don’t lower your source volume a touch. The 3.5mm headphone out can also be finicky with 1/8″ -> 1/4″ adapters because there’s a bevel on either side (2/4 of my adapters don’t fit because they are too wide around the base). Finally, while volume control is analog controlled via digital (this is a very good thing), there are no volume buttons nor a knob on the Big Ego–you have to do it at the source. I’d like to see a volume control in v2.
It can also be very slightly grainy on some recordings. I went about trying to solve the (admittedly minor) grain issue. Is the grain the fault of the dac? Could I fix it? Let’s see…
